Since 2010, we have inspired young Canadians to take leadership roles in their communities and to celebrate their peers contributing in the environmentalism movement.

“The Starfish Canada… offers an interesting mix of stories about the efforts of young people.”

– Canadian Wildlife Federation, 2014

Our mission

The Starfish Canada celebrates and amplifies environmental, solutions-based stories across the nation, with a focus on youth-based initiatives.

Our vision

Societal: Canadian youth are an interconnected, online community that shares stories and takes action to protect Canada’s environment.

Organizational: The Starfish Canada is the nation’s youth forum for responsible decision-making regarding Canada’s environment.

Our values

  • Thought-provoking: We will provide conversations and dialogues that prompt deeper thinking and understanding of environmental issues and solutions.
  • Fact-based: Through our work, we will ensure our work is based in sound science and research.
  • Solutions-focused: Our work will provide the tools to make a positive difference for Canada’s natural environment.
  • Engaging: We will discuss environmental topics through mediums that provide high-quality participation and mentorship.

What we do

  • Youth journalism on our online forum. We are the source for responsible decision-making for Canadian youth. Our university student volunteers are trained on how to take technical science, policy and research and turn it into accessible articles for our readers to enjoy.
  • Community outreach and education. We aim to create a community that is engaged, grows new relationships, and builds upon pre-existing bonds. We are in towns and cities across the nation through outreach events, festivals, workshops and fairs.
  • Provide a voice to community groups. We celebrate local groups that recognizes and engage in positive action. We do much of this work through our Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 program, where we amplify projects being done by youth across Canada to create a cleaner, healthier Canada.
