Globally, communities are facing extreme weather events in ever-increasing numbers and intensity. Droughts, floods, wildfires, hurricanes and heat waves and polar vortices are now common occurrences causing significant financial, social and environmental stress on governments and private citizens alike. Taking action to increase communities’ resilience can help to reduce these impacts and improve their overall ability to recover after an extreme weather event. While there is much documentation on actions to take to increase resilience, the uncertainty of our climate makes this concept difficult to measure. Our two speakers will share with us, the resilience frameworks they have helped develop and how they assist in improving resilience across their jurisdictions.
Dinah Timbalo from the Saskatchewan Government Department of the Environment will share with us Saskatchewan’s Climate Resilience Measurement Framework.
Kevin Summers from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will unpack his work on the Climate Resilience Screening Index.
