When we look at the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that Canada and others committed to achieving by 2030, there is not a single goal that does not involve volunteers. Volunteers contribute to eliminating poverty, advocating for human rights, protecting the planet, and creating thriving and resilient communities.

In 2017, Volunteer Canada began to collaborate with Employment and Social Development Canada to  explore the link between volunteer activities of Canadians and the SDGs. To date, we have co-hosted two roundtables on SDGs and volunteering to discuss:

  • In what ways do the SDGs align with volunteering activity in Canadian communities?
  • How can the SDGs be used to increase volunteering and giving?
  • How can volunteering be tapped to achieve the SDGs?

Read our report to learn more about the outcomes of these discussions and our preliminary mapping data from the 2013 General Social Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating against the SDGs.
