Walking with Our Sisters is a commemorative art installation to honor the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women of Canada and the United States; to acknowledge the grief and torment the families of these women continue to suffer, and to raise awareness of this issue and create opportunity for broad based community dialogue. We are proud to announce that Calgary will be hosting this exhibit in the Spring of 2018.
The primary goal of this installation is to honour the lives of the women and girls. The second goal of this installation is to acknowledge the on-going grieving process the family and friends of those missing are going through. The third aspect of this installation is to raise public awareness of this issue, and also to use it as an opportunity for sharing different teachings and protocols.
We will be conducting a series of community conversations. These conversations will be an opportunity for engagement with Indigenous and non-Indigenous people of Calgary and surrounding area. The engagement goals are to introduce the background of the exhibit, seek partnerships and volunteers, receive feedback and ideas about bringing the exhibit to Calgary, and create opportunities of understanding in relation to the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women in Canada issue. It will also provide a dialogue to raise awareness about Indigenous culture and other social issues. We hope that through these conversations, and the exhibit, it will create an opportunity for learning and sharing Indigenous people and communities in a positive light, as well to facilitate an avenue for reconciliation between Indigenous people of the Treaty 7 area and Calgary.
To do all of this , we need your help. This beautiful and moving exhibit is entirely crowd-sourced. The artwork, the fundraising, even to the where the exhibit is shown and how it is placed in that spot, is all being fueled by people who have chosen to become involved. Collectively we are creating one unified voice to honor these women, their families and a call of attention to this issue. We are looking for individuals who are willing to donate some of their time to bring this exhibit together. We are looking for organizations to partner with us to raise awareness about this issue or who would like to make a donation of any kind to support this cause. We are looking for anyone who wants to make a change in the Calgary Area.
