The Friends of Barra Society are fund raising to establish two commemorative markers to remember the tragic loss of life of five young men from Barra Scotland in the Merchant Marine who lost their lives in the 1917 Halifax Explosion. One marker will be in Iona, Cape Breton on the grounds of St. Columba Church, the other in Fairview Cemetery in Halifax. Iona was chosen because that area was first settled by people from Barra in 1800; Fairview Cemetery was chosen as this is known as the “historic Cemetery of Halifax” with many others buried there from the Halifax Explosion as well as bodies from The Titanic.
