The Fort McMurray Heritage Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the region’s cultural heritage and educating its citizens about their community’s history. We are an independent non-profit organization, not run by any government organization, and we receive funding from a wide range of sources. The Society oversees two museum sites: Heritage Village and Heritage Shipyard. We are officially recognized as a museum by the Alberta Museums Association.
The Society was founded in 1974 by Bob Duncan, Edmonton-born and a manager of Canadian Utilities.
Heritage Village has fourteen historical buildings, several replica buildings, and a large collection of artifacts on a 6.6 acre site. (That’s about 2.7 hectares.)
Heritage Shipyard has seven historical boats and barges, two historical train cars, three historical buildings, a collection of artifacts, and an outdoor playground and picnic area and a train canopy.
Heritage Village and Heritage Shipyard are two sites working together to educate citizens and visitors about Fort McMurray history.
