Genesis Centre

The NECCS (North East Centre of Community Society) story is an incredible journey of a small group of dedicated people who had a big dream.

In 1994, a group of committed community volunteers, later to become NECCS, approached the City of Calgary with a vision. They dreamed of building a community centre in Northeast Calgary to meet the growing and unique recreation, sport, culture, and educational needs of the residents. This facility was to become a community hub for what continues to be the most culturally diverse quadrant of the city.

The vision became more defined through meetings with a growing variety of potential partners and users. In 2000, a partnership with the YMCA was formalized. In 2005, the three primary community associations of Martindale, Saddle Ridge, and Taradale officially joined forces along with the Calgary Soccer Federation to form NECCS. A partnership model between the YMCA, the City of Calgary, NECCS, and the Calgary Public Library formed the operating committee of what was to become The Genesis Centre. In 2011, Genesis Land Development Corporation committed to a 15-year naming agreement for the facility prior to opening under the name of The Genesis Centre of Community Wellness.

In January 2012, The Genesis Centre opened it’s doors to the public and saw over one million visits in it’s first year alone.

In addition to the full complement of fitness, health and recreation services, the complex provides facilities for large cultural events and activities as well as urgently needed indoor and outdoor soccer fields. It also provides access to a range of human and social services through 1000 Voices, a community and human services wing inside the facility.
