What is Alliance 2030?
Alliance 2030 is a national network of organizations, institutions and individuals committed to achieving the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals by the year 2030. Our digital platform is a growing database of all the work that’s being done across Canada in alignment with the SDGs, amplified by high-quality storytelling through our blog and podcast series. This online space will allow members to easily connect with like-minded Canadians so they can share learnings, find the support they need, and stay up-to-date on progress towards the SDGs.
We’ll also be taking this work into our communities, creating spaces for our members to come together and forging relationships across sectors to connect our network with the support they need to succeed.
Where we’ve come from
For Canada’s sesquicentennial, Community Foundations of Canada collaborated with a number of supporting organizations to create Alliance 150, a national network of organizations seeking to make the most of Canada’s milestone year through initiatives that focused on
youth engagement, diversity and inclusion, care for the environment, reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, and much more.
At the conclusion of 2017, what remained was a vibrant network of organizations and individuals who were passionate about continuing make Canada a better place for everyone. We knew we didn’t want to lose that energy and momentum and aligning around the UN Sustainable Development Goals seemed like a natural fit.
Why the SDGs?
The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which were adopted in 2015 and set goals for 2030, mark a bold leap forward in the fight to address poverty and protect the planet. The SDGs are not about halfway measures or Band-Aid solutions, but rather about working directly with the people and communities most affected by global challenges to create social change. We know from past experience that to be most effective, SDG solutions will need to be collaborative, holistic, and contextualized to specific countries, geographies, cultures, and social norms.
That’s why Community Foundations of Canada, the Canadian Council for International Cooperation, and a dedicated group of partners have led the creation of Alliance 2030, an open network to help mobilize public engagement, cross-sector collaboration, knowledge sharing and institutional action around the SDGs in Canada. Together, we believe that these goals can be accomplished both in Canada and abroad by working creatively and collaboratively at both the local and global level.
We know that the efforts to achieve the SDGs in Canada and abroad aren’t led by any one organization, and we know that working in silos can lead to missed opportunities. In that spirit, we’re plugging into an active and thriving network of impactful work already being done across the country. By serving as a convenor and facilitator, our mission is to strengthen that work through the creation of physical and digital spaces for the public, private, and civil society sectors to align on their efforts.
